Committee on
Stratigraphic Nomenclature
Geological Society of the Philippines
The
present Philippine Stratigraphic Guide is a product of the Committee
on Stratigraphic Nomenclature which was formed during the 1998
Geological Convention under the auspices of the Geological Society
of the Philippines. Its creation comes 30 years after the adoption
of the Philippine Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature in 1968. The
need to come up with a new Stratigraphic Guide was prompted by the
widespread “misuse and abuse” in the current practice of
stratigraphic nomenclature. In coming out with this Guide, the
Committee was guided mainly by the two editions (1976 and 1994) of
the International Stratigraphic Guide, which were produced by the
International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Classiciation of the
International Union of Geological Sciences.
This
Guide discusses three main categories of stratigraphic units –
lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic. In
addition, the sections on General Procedures and Stratotypes are
important parts if the Guide. The presentation that follows confines
itself to the essential features and new concepts embodied in the
Guide. The Paleontological Society of the Philippines assisted the
Committee in the preparation of the section on biostratigraphy.
