Abstract
In tropical countries like the Philippines, the exploration for nickeliferous laterite deposits is mainly a function of favorable topography over a suitable lithology. However, a review of exploration activities conducted over many years in Dinagat Island provided more exploration loci that can de-prioritize large areas resulting in minimal drill holes and eventually, reduce exploration costs. Regional soil geochemistry, vegetation mapping, terrain modeling and geomorphic mapping techniques recently used in central Dinagat provided additional data that can aid decisions on where to concentrate exploration efforts and resources in the island. Such lessons learned may be even applicable in other Philippine ultramafic terranes. |
