Abstract

Increasing world prices, the escalating concern on global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions,  and the growing emphasis on energy security  are the major factors driving the resurgence of interest towards the nuclear power option for electricity generation. This new wave of interest on nuclear power is aptly termed “nuclear renaissance”.  A vital element to the nuclear renaissance is the global consensus on nuclear safety.   Regulating safety is a national responsibility. States are expected to fulfil their obligations and commitment to a global nuclear safety regime. Nuclear regulatory bodies are tasked to enable the States fulfil this commitment.
