The facies concept is often useful in detailed stratigraphic studies of well prospected areas, and in the search for local stratigraphic oil traps. Regional facies analyses are also very important in the preliminary evaluation of virgin basins by petroleum geologists. By coordinating all available geological and reconnaissance geophysical data it may be possible to predict with fair accuracy many major stratigraphic and structural trends within a basin prior to expensive deep drilling.
