ABSTRACT |
|
In the Tres Hermanas Area, Antipolo,
Rizal, Philippines, the Plio-Pleistocene
Laguna Formation is made up mainly of
tuffs deposited in an alluvial setting.
The formation exhibits cycles of
extensive tuff deposition interrupted by
periods of soil development shown by
paleosol horizons intensively colonized
by plant growth. Stegodon fossil remains
consist of teeth, tusk and bone pieces
belonging to at least 5 different
animals that have been unearthed from
the area. The fossil specimens and
paleobotanical data indicate a
subtropical moderate climate. lt is
suggested that the proboscideans reached
the Philippine Islands eventually by non
continuous land bridges where the
animals had to cross and swim through
salt water barriers.
